Does using a WordPress Themes have a stigma?

It is not too difficult to believe that using a WordPress Theme could have a stigma when compared with the creative and artistic inspirations of a great graphic design.

Not so long ago the difference between custom and template design was huge – where it was possible to spot a template a mile away.  However themes have come a very long way, and you would not be aware that many of the impressive websites you see are themes, or ‘variations on a theme’.

Here is why I think themes are awesome.

  1. It is not just about looks, but the design has been tested to look consistent across all page structures and variations
  2. Themes have built in ‘under the hood’ functionality which is often very well thought out based on the target website user for that particular theme.
  3. Themes, due to their larger userbase, have been more thoroughly tested for bugs and inconsistencies
  4. There is such a wide range of themes, you are bound to find one you love
  5. The look of a theme can be completely changed with just some colour, font and image changes – all easily managed via css.

Why some websites don’t make the Portfolio

or ‘Why oh why did the client touch their beautiful site’?

There has developed an unanticipated problem with the apparent ease now possible as a result of Content Managed Sites (or CMS’s).

Once a site has been handed over, the client feels that they should be able to do everything themselves.  And they do…sometimes with dire consequences.
